Endodontics is a specialized field of dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing and treating diseases and injuries of the dental pulp. The dental pulp is the innermost part of the tooth, containing nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. When this area becomes infected or damaged, it can cause significant pain and sensitivity, often requiring specialized treatment to save the tooth and alleviate discomfort. There are several endodontic treatment options available at State Street Dental, including:

One of the primary procedures in endodontics is root canal therapy. This treatment is essential when the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures or trauma. During a root canal, our dentist will carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp, clean and shape the inside of the root canal and then fill and seal the space. To restore the tooth’s functionality and appearance, a crown or another type of restoration is usually placed on top of the treated tooth.

Root canal therapy is highly effective, but sometimes additional endodontic treatment may be necessary if the infection persists or complications arise. In such cases, our dentist might recommend root canal retreatment or an apicoectomy. Retreatment involves reopening the tooth, removing the filling materials and cleaning the canals before resealing them. An apicoectomy, on the other hand, involves surgically removing the tip of the tooth’s root and sealing the root canal.

Other endodontic procedures include pulpotomies (which are often provided for children and remove part of the pulp to preserve the healthy remainder) and pulpal debridement (which involves cleaning out the infected pulp tissue to relieve pain.)
