The procedure begins with a small incision in the gum tissue near the affected tooth. This allows access to the underlying bone and the root tip. Once the area is exposed, the infected tissue and the very end of the root are removed. A small filling is then placed to seal the end of the root canal. This helps prevent future infections. Finally, a few stitches are placed to aid in the healing of your gum tissue.
Over the following months, your bone will naturally heal around the end of the root. The success of this procedure is typically high, especially when performed by experienced dental professionals.
