Immediate Care:
- Avoid Chewing: Do not chew for at least two hours or until the anesthetic has completely worn off to prevent biting your cheek, tongue or lip.
- Manage Swelling: Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face where the extraction occurred. Use it for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 48 hours.
Activities to Avoid:
- Touching the Extraction Site: Refrain from touching the site with your tongue or fingers to avoid irritation or infection.
- Drinking Through a Straw: Avoid using a straw and do not swish or spit vigorously, as these actions can dislodge the blood clot and delay healing.
- Nose Blowing and Sneezing: Try to avoid blowing your nose or sneezing violently, as these can also disrupt the healing clot.
Oral Hygiene:
- Rinsing Your Mouth: Do not rinse your mouth on the day of the extraction. You can gently rinse with warm salt water starting the day after your procedure.
- Smoking and Tobacco Use: Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products for several days, as they can impede healing and increase the risk of complications.
General Care:
- Rest and Relaxation: Relax as much as possible and avoid all strenuous activities for the first 24 hours. Keeping your head elevated will help minimize swelling and bleeding.
- Diet: Stick to a soft diet for the first 48 hours. Foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes and applesauce are good options. Gradually reintroduce solid foods as you feel comfortable.
Pain Management and Medication:
- Pain Relief: Use over-the-counter pain medications as recommended. If prescribed, take your medications as directed.
- Antibiotics: If you were prescribed antibiotics, ensure you complete the entire course, even if you start feeling better.
